The appointments that actually prevent something

Figures in this story are illustrative while we finalise reporting with the practice. The workflows described are real. The most valuable appointment in a podiatry practice is the one the patient never thinks to book. Excellent Foot Clinic knew this. Acting on it was the hard part.

Diabetic foot checks are preventive by definition, which means the patient has no symptom prompting them to ring. They present when something has already gone wrong, at which point the appointment is a different and worse conversation. The same logic applied to routine maintenance patients, who drifted out of their interval without anybody noticing until they had effectively stopped being patients. And because booking was only possible when the desk was staffed, even the patients who did want to come in were constrained by office hours.

Recall was the whole intervention. At-risk patients are now worked from the practice's own interval and called proactively, so they are seen on schedule rather than in response to a problem. Maintenance patients are rebooked at their usual cadence automatically, which restored a predictable base load to the diary that had been slowly eroding.
